The Benefits of Choosing Implant-Supported Dentures
Patients who no longer have natural teeth but still retain enough bone in the jaw to support implants may want to choose implant-supported dentures over conventional or immediate dentures.
Offering stability, comfort and a natural appearance, implant-supported dentures are the best alternative available for replacing missing teeth. Many patients report that their only regret is that they didn’t receive them sooner.
Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, today’s implant-supported dentures have become very popular with frustrated denture wearers, as well as patients who are not happy with the transition from natural teeth to dentures. Modern implant dentures are comfortable and provide the appearance of natural teeth. They provide superior stability and help to preserve remaining bone under the gums, while retaining the natural appearance of your face and lips.
Why Choose Implant-Supported Dentures?
Unlike regular dentures, which sit on the gums and rely on suction to remain in place, implant-supported dentures are supported by and attached to metal implants that have been surgically placed in your jawbone. An implant-supported denture is locked firmly into place to eliminate the possibility of lisps or discomfort when eating hard foods, which can be a problem for patients who have regular dentures. Implant-supported dentures can be removed for cleaning and are easily snapped back into place.
Types of Implant-Supported Dentures
Like conventional dentures, implant-supported dentures are constructed of an acrylic base that resembles natural gums. Attached to this base are acrylic teeth that are formed and coloured to provide the appearance of natural teeth. Implant-supported dentures require at least two implants for support, and most patients choose four or more to provide superior stability.
Landry Denture Clinic offers two types of implant-supported dentures: locator-retained and All-on-Four dentures. Both are constructed using an acrylic base that holds porcelain or acrylic teeth. Let’s look at the differences.
Also known as stud-attachment dentures, locator-retained dentures are ideal for patients who no longer have any natural teeth present in their jaw. As the name implies, dentures are held in place by surgically-implanted metal implants that lock onto the denture. These implants are typically placed in the lower jaw because the upper jaw bone structure provides a more stable surface for the denture to rest upon.
Landry Denture Clinic offers your choice of two or four implants to support your denture, depending upon how stable you wish the lower denture to be. Two implants placed in the lower jaw to provide stability is very effective when compared to conventional dentures, but dentures supported by four implants are the closest you can come to feeling like you have natural teeth again.
All-on-Four Dentures provide the most support because they are fixed to the jaw and need to be removed only during your yearly check-up with the dentist and the denturist. Because the denture is affixed so tightly to the gum, there is little likelihood that food will become trapped under the denture. However, if that occurs, the use of a Waterpik® will remove trapped food particles.
Which type of denture is right for you? That can only be determined after consulting with your denturist and completing a CT scan to determine how much bone has been retained in your jaw.
